John Jones is fortyninegroup’s CEO and Chief Connector. Mr. Jones has spent more than two decades in the businesses of content and technology, focused on the growth of business-to-consumer and business-to-business companies through strategic business development, strategic marketing. development, optimization and analysis of social and traditional media campaigns, technological advances through application and platform development, and content development, in sports, media and technology enterprises. Prior to forming fortyninegroup, Mr. Jones was SVP of Content for MediaNet Digital, a privately held business-to-business online media distribution company, where he was responsible for global management of licensing and relationships with MediaNet’s content partners including all four major labels and their subsidiaries, thousands of independent labels, film studios and production companies. In addition, Mr. Jones oversaw the entire repertoire of content in the MediaNet Digital service, accounting for ingestion and processing new content and making millions of tracks available to consumers through MediaNet Digital’s distributors that included Yahoo!, Urge, Zune, Tesco, Target, AOL and Samsung. Additionally, John worked on distribution deals with Fortune 500 companies such as Yahoo, Microsoft, Samsung and Target to advance MediaNet’s distribution. In 2006, MediaNet was named New York’s #1 technology growth company in revenue, by Deloitte and Touche.
Previously, Mr. Jones was involved in advancing the concept of delivering on-demand music through Cable TV. As VP and Programming Director of Viacom’s The Box Music Network, he was in charge of music programming including creating online and offline promotions, developing strategic partnerships and integrating branding and marketing to enhance viewership and revenue. Prior to that, Mr. Jones spent more than five years overseeing music programming and as senior producer at MuchMusic, a globally-recognized music TV channel seen in over 40 million homes in the US and Canada, where he was responsible for doubling MuchMusic’s audience. For his efforts, Mr. Jones was recognized as “One of the 40 Most Influential People in Canadian Television”. In 1998, he launched the programming for MuchMoreMusic, a Much brand extension channel. Additionally, Mr. Jones A&R’d several multi-platinum music compilations and initiated multi-platform online and broadcast interactive content while at MuchMusic.
Mr. Jones started his career in radio, as music director at Canadian stations including CFNY-FM and CHFI-FM, where his significant efforts in re-positioning and re-formatting the stations resulted in doubling and tripling of their respective market shares, and both stations being recognized as “Radio Station Of The Year”, while Mr. Jones was awarded “Music Director Of The Year”. Prior to working in commercial radio, Mr. Jones launched and programmed college station CKLN-FM, and was a jazz, blues, world and rock music producer for Canada’s national broadcaster, the CBC. Throughout his career, Mr. Jones has worked with artists from Eminem to Elvis Costello, Radiohead to Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt to Neil Young, Smashing Pumpkins to Sinead O’Connor and Beck to David Bowie.
Born in Toronto, John Jones is an Electrical Engineering graduate from Ryerson University, with Post-Graduate Studies in Communications at York University, and cites renown Canadian Communications theorists Marshall McLuhan and Harold Innis among his influences. He has lived in Miami since 2000 where he is actively involved in Multisports for leisure, fitness and business, and is a member of Triathlon America, a council member on the Florida Region USATriathlon Council and represents Florida on the USATriathlon Age Group Council. Mr. Jones is an Ironman, Age Group Triathlon multiple event winner, race series winner and regular top 5 finisher at various Triathlon distances including Ironman distance races, as well as a Marathon Age Group event winner. In addition to being an accomplished sailor, John Jones has an extensive knowledge of mid-century modern architecture and design, and is an advocate of USGBC and LEED initiatives.
Cortney Martin serves as the Director of Client Marketing, bringing a mix of competitive sports experience, human factors engineering skills, and creativity to serve the needs of the fortyninegroup clients. She designs, organizes, and executes tactical marketing plans for event, athlete, equipment, accessory, coaching, media, and registration clients. She strives to develop plans that are a careful and thoughtful reflection of the unique values, goals, and attributes of the individual client.
Cortney’s MS and PhD degrees (Virginia Tech, 1993 & 2007) are in human factors engineering and ergonomics with an emphasis in interface and instructional design. Most recently, she worked at the Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research where she chaired the three-day international Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy with primary responsibility for sponsorships, marketing, event management, and publishing. Cortney was an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and a reviewer for Pearson Education’s Interactive Science series. Her instructional background includes teaching courses in introductory engineering (Department of Engineering Education), sustainable energy (Mechanical Engineering), and the interdisciplinary earth sustainability series, which was selected as a University Exemplary Program.
Cortney is active in the community, having served as a co-PI for a community wind and solar demonstration project, bringing together faculty, students, local professionals and donors to install a vertical axis wind turbine and solar array at the local Y.
A triathlete since 2009, Cortney quickly climbed the ranks with top placings at USA Triathlon Nationals earning a spot on Team USA for the ITU Olympic Distance Age Group World Championships in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. She blogs about her triathlon life at www.CortTheSport.com. Cortney is a top female master’s competitor in the Virginia Triathlon Series and a multiple Boston Qualifier who ran the event in 2013. Prior to triathlon, she was an avid equestrian who competed in hunters, equitation, and U.S. Pony Club events and later in dressage.
Cortney is based in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she lives with her husband and two sons.
Erin Hogston is the Director of Sales for fortyninegroup, and brings to the team over 10 years of sales and marketing experience in the endurance sports industry. She has a proven track record of success in sales productivity, customer relations, sponsorship sales & valuation, and marketing management for various clients including one of the largest 10K running events in the nation, one of the top five best iron distance triathlons in the world, and a triathlon production company that produces over 50 events throughout North & South Carolina.
Erin is a former division one collegiate sprinter and a 4-year letterwinner at University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science and All-Conference honors in the Colonial Athletic Association. She was also named team MVP and received the Student Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Award.
Erin is actively involved in numerous community efforts. She was recently appointed by the State Governor to fill a seat on the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners. Erin serves on the board of directors for TOPS Athletics as their marketing advisor. She is a Boston Marathon Qualifier and regularly places in the top of her age group in most running and triathlon events and trains and races as a member of Without Limits Endurance Team. Erin resides in Wilmington, NC with her husband and two young boys.
