PPD BEACH2BATTLESHIP TRIATHLON CONCLUDES SEVENTH YEAR

2015 Race Registration Opens November 1

Wilmington, N.C. – October 27, 2014 – The seventh annual PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon, produced by Set Up Events and benefiting the Wilmington Family YMCA, took place this past Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Nearly 2,200 triathletes from 43 states and several countries raced the half and full iron distance events. Additionally, more than 200 runners also participated in the inaugural New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) 5K.

Vinny Johnson of North Berwick, ME was the overall winner of the 140.6 full iron distance race, finishing in 8:28:24, while Melissa Alfano of Raeford, NC won the female division with a time of 9:14:20. The full iron distance event included a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2 mile run.

The overall winner of the 70.3 half iron distance race was Iain Alexandrios of Princeton, NJ who finished in 3:59:51. The top female finisher was Hannah Smith of Cary, NC with a time of 4:33:40. The half iron distance event included a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. Both races began at Wrightsville Beach and finished in Downtown Wilmington.

Among the participants were professional triathletes, age-groupers through 72 years of age, military personnel, physically challenged paratriathletes, and relay teams. The PPD Heroes were among the competitors. Each overcame serious illness and participated in the race to raise public awareness about the importance of clinical trials for the development of critical medical treatments. The 2014 PPD Heroes included: Wendy Chioji, Tim Fortuna, Laura Hull, Mary Kreis, Meg Roberts, Chris Samia and Emily Schaller.

Triathlon legend Michellie Jones served as the weekend’s honorary host. She participated in the pro panel breakfast as well as the NHRMC 5K, then greeted athletes at the Expo. The former ITU world champion, Kona Ironman world champion, and Olympic medalist congratulated finishers then presented awards at the athlete celebration brunch.
